Benefits of electric blankets and heated mattress pads

Reducing humidity around your bed

Using a heated mattress pad can reduce moisture around your mattress by a much as 50%. This reduction in humidity can hinder the growth of allergens, such as dust mites and bacteria. Keeping your mattress warm is a good thing.

Better sleep

Sharing a bed with a dual-zone comforter can solve most problems occurring when not sleeping alone. Some prefer to sleep in colder rooms than others, and the constant debate over the temperature can easily be solved when one adjusts the individual temperature on their side. In addition, when traveling with air conditioning, bring an electric car blanket and keep comfortable when others are blasting the A/C.
Having a perfect sleeping environment depends largely on ambient temperature, adjusting it with a heated blanket is easier than ever.

Muscle aches and soreness

Supplying heat to sore muscles alleviates pain and discomfort by relaxing the tissue. Reducing pain by increasing blood flow will allow for comfortable, undisturbed sleep.
The same mechanism for reducing muscle stiffness can be applied in reducing the symptoms of rheumatic diseases such as arthritis and other varieties. Increased blood flow due to heat supplied by the electric blanket or heated mattress pad will relax muscles and joints, reliving aches.
Many people report great benefits of using heated blankets and pads for back pain.

Cold intolerance

Some people are intolerable to cold, and this problem is quite apparent when they climb into beds. Sheets are always at ambient temperature which in most cases is much lower than your skin’s. This problem can easily be solved by using a heated mattress pad with a pre-warm setting, that can be programmed to keep your bed warm before you go to sleep.

Are electric blankets safe?

This guide will attempt to demystify some common beliefs about the safety of electric blankets and heated mattress pads.

Electromagnetic radiation

Electric blankets as any other electric appliance create electromagnetic fields. An electromagnetic field or EMF is created whenever current (electricity) passes through a conductor (wire). Since electric blankets feature relatively large amounts of conductive material that has current passing through they generate EMF.

Since the early 1980′s dozens of studies have been conducted on EMFs emitted by electric blankets and similar appliances. The strength of measured fields was significant enough to raise safety concerns. Most blankets 20 years agoa produced nearly 20 times more mGs (milligauss) of electromagnetic radiation than deemed safe by EPA. Many scientists began investigate the dangers of EMFs in close proximity to human body but the results of their studies were inconclusive.

Nevertheless, the electric blanket manufacturers responded to the rising concerns and significantly redesigned their products, effectively lowering the radiation level to far below EPA requirements. Electric blankets today produce almost no electromagnetic fields, making the safe for everyone.

However, since there were no definite results in EMF studies, to be 100% safe it is generally recommended to:

  • Avoid using electric blankets when pregnant or breastfeeding, newborns and fetuses are likely to be more susceptible to electromagnetic fields
  • Do not use blankets and heated mattress pads for longer than recommended in the user’s manual

With recent introduction of low-voltage electric blankets, these products are safer than ever.

Other dangers

Some electric blankets are high voltage appliances, that have live electricity running very close to your unprotected body. It is generally advised to follow all guidelines in the included manual in addition to the following:

  • Never keep plugged-in blankets or mattress pads wet or close to water
  • Do not wash or dry the products unless the manual specifically states it is allowed to do so
  • Do not plug in your 110V blanket into an outlet in another country, unless you are sure your product supports different voltage requirements
  • Keep electric blankets away from children and pets.
